One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
