Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Join Most Affluent 10%, Study Finds

According to fresh study, the median employee in the UK would require 52 years' worth of income to reach the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Expanding Wealth Gap Across Decades

The study reviewed wealth distribution information including the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

An economic expert associated with the analysis commented: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a average worker accumulating their complete salary during their working years would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Measuring the Economic Gap

The study found that the gap between the net worth of the typical individual and an individual in the wealthiest decile was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to £1.3m in real terms by recent times.

The analyst further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life well-off tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the financial disparity expanding in absolute terms, the share of overall assets in the UK held by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," as stated in the study.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to nearly seven and a half times.

Factors of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, through growing real estate costs and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, according to the study.

These gains typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

Additionally, there were pronounced geographic differences, with the average level of wealth in recent years amounting to £290k in the SE of England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were supported by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the data shows many households were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
